Inpex to drill at Darwin Harbour

JAPANESE gas company Inpex has announced plans to begin drilling tests in Darwin harbour later this year.

Inpex announced the tests will investigate the composition of the sea bed, which is part of the engineering and design phase of a proposed multi-billion-dollar gas plant.

An Inpex spokesman said the tests will help the company decide where it will place a loading jetty and where to dredge the shipping channel and turning basin.

The spokesman added two barges will be in the harbour for up to three months from late September.

Inpex said safety zones would be put in place surrounding the barges.
